In Limón you will find the main commercial seaport of Costa Rica. This marvellous region lies between the San Juan River (to the north of the country) and the Sixaola River (to the south) and from the northern plains to the Talamanca Mountain Range (to the west). The Caribbean region, locates 160 km from San José, makes up the Limón province. To get there you must take the Braulio Carrillo highway, which will take you through banana plantations, ornamental plant farms, pejibaye farms and others.
The exotic coconut and papaya aroma, its colonial houses, exquisite flavours, different cultural and musical backgrounds (soca, reggae and calypso) will you a warm welcome to this extraordinary Caribbean land.
You will impressed by the nature, its people, its traditions, and the October Carnivals (a very popular celebration). Every year a surprising amount of people go to Limón to be part of the Afro-Caribbean culture. These musical rhythms started in different regions of Africa and were later brought here some five decades ago by Alfred King.
His intentions were to share with Costa Rica beliefs and traditions from his ancestors. Today, they manifest themselves as a way of life. Limón is also well known for its delicious food and language. There are also indigenous, Chinese and European communities.
Puerto Viejo is one of the places surfers choose to conquer Salsa Brave, which is one of the most famous waves in the world (it can reach up to 13 meters high). It is also an ideal place to enjoy the great variety of bars, international restaurants and stores. Other surfing beaches are Bonita Beach, Westfalia and Isla Uvita.
The climate of this hot region has temperatures that range from 35°C at night. Rainfall is frequent year around, with drier period during the months of April and October
