The northern tourist region of Costa Rica is a land of volcanoes, great amounts of rainfall, humid and cloud forests, big waterfalls and majestic rivers nestled in the midst of splendid vegetation and home of great variety of wildlife. It is easy for the visitor to find different activities, such as horseback riding, canopy tours, mountain biking and animal watching.
The region combines the fertile plains of San Carlos and Guatuso, in the province of Alajuela, with the volcanic mountains ranges of Guanacaste and Tilarán. The most popular attraction of this region is the active Arenal Volcano, which spews lava and ashes.
The Arenal volcano can be seen from a safe distance. At its base you will fin the man made, Lake Arenal, the second largest lake in Central America. The lake provides a great range of recreational activities. People from all over the world come to practice wind surf, since the wind can reach velocities of up to 72 km per hour. The volcano and its surrounding areas are a national park, and it is possible to explore it through its fascinating trails. The Tabacón River is a thermal water source that offers the tourist therapeutic and relaxing baths, with an incredible view to the Arenal volcano.
Another place of great beauty in this area is Cerro Chato, an extinct volcanic crater crowned by a green blue lake. All of these are part of the Arenal Volcano complex. Nearby you can also admire the 30-meter high Fortuna waterfall.
Located in the cloudy summits of the Tilarán mountain range you can find the town of Monteverde. It is well known for its biological reserve of the same name. This reserve protects species such as quetzal and the bellbird. You can also visit the butterfly gardens.
The Caño Negro Wildlife Refuge is located in the Guatuso plains. It is one of the most important protected areas of the region. It protected ecosystems like lakes, swamps and wetlands. These natural environments are a true oasis for aquatic birds, reptiles and mammals, and therefore, an important place for all wildlife lovers.
The Northern Region is characterized by its agricultural productivity and for its dairy farms and by-products, which then gives origin to many other economic activities. Fairs are held in most of the towns, but fights and cattle auctions are also characteristic of the region.
